Operation Enya: Turning Distortion Into Calm

A New Way to Care for Shelter Dogs

Every dog that enters Animal Care & Protective Services deserves more than food, shelter, and medical care. They deserve an environment that helps them feel safe. That's the idea behind Operation Enya, an initiative to transform the sound environment inside our shelter by replacing our outdated 17-year-old speaker system with a modern, full-spectrum audio system designed to reduce stress and improve the well-being of the thousands of dogs who stay with us each year. Our goal is simple: Help us raise $10,000 to make Operation Enya a reality.

Why Sound Matters

Shelters are noisy places. Dogs hear barking, kennel doors slamming, cleaning equipment, radios, conversations, alarms, and constant activity throughout the day. Over time, that noise contributes to stress, anxiety, poor sleep, and overstimulation. Stress doesn't just affect how dogs feel. It affects how they heal, how they behave, and even how they present themselves to potential adopters. A dog that is overwhelmed by its environment may bark constantly, pace, or withdraw, making it harder for adopters to see the loving companion underneath. Creating a calmer environment helps dogs show who they really are.

The Science

Research has shown that carefully selected music and natural soundscapes can significantly reduce stress-related behaviors in shelter dogs. Studies have found that calming audio can reduce barking, encourage resting and sleeping, lower anxiety, improve relaxation, reduce repetitive stress behaviors, and create a more peaceful kennel environment. At ACPS, we want to take advantage of these proven benefits by creating an audio environment designed specifically for animal well-being.

Why We Need a New System

Our current speaker system was installed nearly two decades ago. While it still functions, it was never designed to deliver high-quality therapeutic audio throughout a modern animal shelter. Over the years, aging equipment has led to distorted sound, uneven speaker coverage, harsh frequencies, limited audio quality, and inconsistent listening experiences throughout the building. Instead of creating a calming atmosphere, aging speakers can actually contribute to stress by producing abrupt volume changes and distorted sounds. Replacing the system will allow us to deliver rich, full-spectrum audio consistently throughout our dog housing areas.

What Operation Enya Will Do

The new system will allow us to create scheduled sound environments throughout the day. In the morning, gentle nature sounds and light ambient music will help dogs wake up calmly and begin the day. Throughout the afternoon, relaxing instrumental music mixed with natural soundscapes will reduce boredom and encourage calm behavior. In the evening, soft, slower music will help dogs unwind after a busy day filled with cleaning, enrichment, visitors, and adoptions. Overnight, low-volume calming audio will promote rest and reduce stress during the quietest hours of the shelter. This isn't simply about playing music. It's about creating an environment that supports emotional health every hour of every day.

What Your Donation Will Fund

Your support will help us replace aging speakers throughout the shelter, upgrade wiring and audio infrastructure, install modern full-spectrum speaker technology, improve sound quality and consistency, create scheduled calming playlists throughout the facility, and build a healthier environment for every dog in our care. Every dollar goes toward making the shelter quieter, calmer, and less stressful for the animals who need us most.

Better Sound Means Better Outcomes

A calmer dog is more likely to rest comfortably, recover from illness or surgery, participate in enrichment activities, interact positively with staff and volunteers, show their true personality to adopters, and find a loving home more quickly. Operation Enya is another step in our commitment to providing the highest standard of care possible. Alongside enrichment, playgroups, foster care, behavior support, and excellent veterinary care, a calming sound environment will help improve the daily lives of every dog who comes through our doors.

Our Goal

We are raising $10,000 to replace our outdated sound system and create one of the most calming shelter environments in the country. No donation is too small. Every contribution brings us one step closer to giving shelter dogs a quieter, less stressful place to wait for their new families.
